Se potessi ripercorrere in un attimo, nuotando controcorrente, le rapide di questo fiume oramai giunto al suo estuario, nella estrema fissità di questo mio prossimo viaggio nella noia orizzontale, sceglierei gli anni in cui la volta celeste non era altro che un enorme lenzuolo fatto a cielo e la luna una palla polverosa gettata nel vuoto e catturata con le unghie dall’egoismo del pianeta Terra. E noi, bimbi, cadevamo con essa per sempre, aggrappati in un infinto sprofondo gli uni agli altri, grazie a un gomitolo di lana nera. I grandi dimenticarono in fretta di avere un mondo con certe stelle enormi, sopra il capo, da osservare, mentre noi sacrificavamo la nostra noia migliore per costruire ponti sospesi nello spazio che ci allacciassero a un’agognata luna. La dipingemmo butterata e funesta, con maremoti sulla superficie di un ponto che non era mai tranquillo, ma tutta una schiuma fremente di gorghi e mostri marini. Nuovi esseri di ordinaria malinconia calpestavano un tappeto soffice come zucchero filato sparso su una teglia, in cui si radicavano piante cresciute dolci come torroni. Altre volte immaginammo un balzo da gigante come in mongolfiera, le tante mongolfiere tipiche di una domenica d’estate, un balzo che ci consentisse di fuggire all’avarizia terrestre e alle sue costrizioni. In anni in cui razzi enormi arrugginivano in volo, pensammo a uno sgangherato proiettile cavo sparato negli occhi della luna come nei film dei Meliès, in cui potessimo accovacciarci per il viaggio, assieme ai nostri migliori amici. Ma poi venne il tempo di un leggero disincanto, e, anche sognando a occhi aperti, non potevamo far altro che immaginarci tute e scafandri e missili scagliati a violentare qualche nuovo cielo. E poi, al ritorno, schivare incredibili uragani e tempeste, per posarci placidamente in un mare che ci accogliesse come un telo. Eravamo certo molto giovani e molto felici e pensavamo, con rabbia, di non dover invecchiare mai.
